Comment spam

I’d rather not have to manually delete comment spam. I could (1) turn on comment moderation, so that comments don’t appear until I approve them; or (2) turn on comment verification, so that someone who wants to post a comment needs to type in a string of numbers and letters in order to post a comment. Both of these options are annoying.

Anyone have an opinion?

Update 8/5/06: I’ve enabled comment moderation.

Update: 8/7/06: I was wondering how long it would take for this post to get comment spam. Four days.

Turn on comment verification. It’s a mild convenience. In my experience it’s use is widespread. Wonderful blog BTW. I just read through quite a few of your posts. I now have a good grasp of tempera grassa.

I am not sure if you still have the problem, but why do you not use the Akismet plugin?

(And sorry for replying to this old post — I am going through all your posts. :) )

    Vyoma,

I have no problem with references to old posts. Please feel free to comment on any post on this blog.

At the time I wrote that post, I was using Blogspot, which had fairly primitive spam management features. I have since migrated to WordPress and have enjoyed its much more robust capabilities and plugin architecture. I currently use Akismet in combination with Bad Behavior and Simple Trackback Validation as spam management tools. That combination works extremely well for me and it has been some time since a spam message got through.
