I’m working on some changes to the underlying technical structure of this site. So far, I have switched the database from MySQL version 4 to version 5. That seems to have gone surprisingly well so far (given my limited technical skills), and the site is loading much more quickly.

Next, I will attempt to clean a bunch of old, unused tables out of the database. That may cause some problems with the blog and I may have to restore from backups.

I apologize for any problems over the next couple of days. I’ve been avoiding this for a long time, but it really has to be done if this site is to work the way it’s supposed to. Please let me know if you have any problems with the site.

Thanks.

Updates

24 April 2009: So far, so good. The blog is running a lot faster now. I’ve recovered some recent comments that were in the database, but had become invisible. The archives page is now displaying properly. All the posts and other stuff seem to work correctly.

2 May 2009: Still working fine (he writes while superstitiously knocking wood to banish the avenging spirits of tempted fate). I wish I’d done this a long time ago, as it was much easier than I thought it would be.

Rather, I am experiencing technical difficulties. My apologies to anyone who may have tried to post comments.

Recovery

You may have noticed that this site has been down for more than a week. I won’t bore you with the details—suffice it to say that the database got messed up to the point where my meager technical skills were inadequate to correct the problem. I got some professional help from the excellent Neil Matthews, aka WP Dude. Thanks to his expertise, the site is now back up, although not all functions are restored yet. I am hopeful that this will never happen again, and I apologize for any inconvenience.

If you ever need someone to set up, migrate, fix, or otherwise work on a WordPress site, I strongly suggest you check with Neil first.

SNAFU

I thought I had it all worked out, but apparently not. I created a new install of WordPress, for various technical reasons, and redirected to that site. Unfortunately, the migration of data to the new version just didn’t work the way it was supposed to. Missing features, missing images, messed up database…bleh.

So for now we are back at the old version of the site, which seems to be working just like it always was. I apologize for any problems you may have had here in the last few days. I will test much more extensively before I try anything like that again.

Just upgraded to a new version of WordPress (2.5). Everything seems to be working, except that the plugin used to generate popularity values won’t run. Otherwise, this has been a smoother upgrade than I’ve had in the past. Please let me know if you have any problems accessing site features.

Now that I’ve been blogging for awhile, I thought I’d post a bit about the process. I understand that many people come here without any interest in the mechanics of blogging. If so, then just skip this post. Others will be familiar enough with technical issues that all this will seem way too simple. Again, just skip the post. If I make any mistakes in attempting to explain this, however, I’m hope someone with more technical knowledge than I have will let me know.

I started out, lo these couple of years ago, using the free and easy Blogger service provided by Google. The old version of this blog is still there; I’ll probably get around to deleting it at some point. After a couple of months I got tired of the limitations imposed by blogspot. I had my own domain and host; after a little digging I discovered that my host would install WordPress with just a button press. WordPress imports posts from Blogger, so I installed it and had it do that. I then had to manually import all of my images. That was kind of a pain, but not hard to figure out. Archives not working

Not sure why. Working on it…

Update

16 February 2007: Working again. Somehow the code to call the “SRG Clean Archives” plugin got lost from the archives page.

Just upgraded

To WordPress 2.3. Basic functionality is fine, but some features still not working. Sorry for any inconvenience.

More upgrade woes

For awhile, the front page of the site wasn’t working. I traced the problem down to a plugin conflict involving the display of links in the sidebar. For now, no links. Sorry about any inconvenience.

These darn computers!

Update: I will be testing out possible fixes for this bug. If you have problems loading the first page, or if you get weird display issues, just try again in a few minutes.

Update 1/28/07: No tags either until the plugin I was using for that function is updated to work with WordPress 2.1. I’m feeling like I should have waited a couple of weeks before upgrading. I’ll be more prudent next time.

Update 1/31/07: Tags are back. The problem I’m having with the sidebar appears to be unique to this site. Wonderful.

Update 2/4/07: With an update to the “Sidebar Widgets” plugin, the sidebar and all other features are working properly. Isn’t it great the way computers make our lives so much easier?

Visits per day graph In the unlikely event that you’re interested, this graph shows what the upgrade did to the number of visits per day. Notice the gap.

Site update

You may have noticed that this site was down or displaying completely wrong over the last couple of days. That’s because I attempted to upgrade my version of WordPress (from 2.05 to 2.1) and messed it up. Compounding my error, I tried the upgrade the day before I had to drive to Portland Maine for three days for work and had no time to try to fix the site.

It’s now better, but not completely back up. I’ll keep working on it until the site is functioning properly again. My apologies for any inconvenience. I’ll try not to let this happen again.

Update

Everything now seems to be displaying properly. The site seems to load more quickly with the new version of WordPress. Please let me know if you have any problems.
